Beneficial bacteria (Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter) live on the surface of your moving bed or static media. If you have too little media, ammonia and nitrite levels will spike. Calculated results represent the capacity of *perfectly mature* media in ideal temperatures. In reality, factors like cold water or a developing biofilm can reduce efficiency.
